YIKES. SO I decided last night that I would try to hand dye some bare Peruvian highland wool I bought on etsy. The cheapest seller around! Insert plug here: http://www.etsy.com/shop/windrose . I went to buy another skein yesterday but unfortunately she is sold out. UGG just my luck. Its called Ecru thick and thin. Comes in a 250 yard hank!! for only $16 plus shipping. Most etsy hand spun pricing is ridiculous!
I was kind of scared about messing up my yarn. I had already knit 2 small hats but I did not see any tutorials about dyeing a project that was already knit. I figured what the HAY, I'll try it. I started with the smallest hat, a preemie size. Good thing my grandma is cheap and had some Flavor-aid. I mean who doesn't spend the extra 10 cents on Kool-aid brand. The flavor aid hat is lime green and the Kool-aid hat is red.
I started out with this tutorial from Knitty:
http://www.knitty.com/ISSUEfall02/FEATdyedwool.html
Knitty's tutorial does NOT call for vinegar, but I used it anyway! Gather all your materials! And you will need a microwave BTW, duh!
Get the item you want to dye. I've only tried this on small hats with a solid color. More experiments to come. Make sure that the material is dye-able!
STEP UNO! Soak your item in luke warm water and 1/3 cup of vinegar for about 20 minutes.
STEP DOS! Carefully take your hat out of the vinegar and strain. Make sure you strain the liquid back into the bowl you are using, you will need it later. I pushed my hat lightly against the strainer to take out excess water.
STEP TRES! This is where you will need another bowl. Empty your flavor into the 2nd EMPTY bowl. This is where the water and vinegar comes in. You want to add enough of that solution to cover your project. The more water you add, the lighter the color will be. So if you want a darker color, add more flavor! and when I say flavor I mean the kool aid.
***Muy Importante! Do not move your project from hot to cold water, it will felt if it is wool. This is why we are using the same water and not adding new water***
STEP QUATRO! Add you project to the bowl with kool aid. Let it soak up the mixture. This is where you need your TONGS. After the bottom soaked, I flipped over with tongs to saturate the top. You will then want to place your microwave safe bowl into the microwave. Depending on the size of your item, you will want to nuke for 1 to 2 minutes. Since my hat was small, I nuked for 1 minute.
You will see the wool begin to soak up the color. I took my bowl OUT of the microwave, put on a table to cool. BUT flip your item over before you leave it to cool. TONGS! Once cooled down, you will place in the microwave again. Repeat this step until the water is clear and your project is the color you want.
STEP CINCO! When done, take your project out and place in strainer. Push as much water out of the project as you can. Make sure your item is placed somewhere to cool down.
STEP SEIS! You need ANOTHER bowl! Fill it with water and dish soap. Set your item in the mixture, and flip it so both sides are saturated. Get your strainer and put the item in it. Run your item over the tap until all the soap is completely washed out. Squish against the strainer to drain the water. Place somewhere to dry.
END PRODUCT!
AND done! I plan on doing a couple more experiments and a how to video. I'll post them up with that happens.
